Ce magnifique ouvrage a été déniché au fin fond d’un souk d’antiquités, lors d’une visite aux portes du désert du Rajasthan.

Le suzani (prononcer souzani) est un type de broderie et de textile tribal décoratif d’Asie centrale et est principalement manufacturé en Ouzbékistan, au Tadjikistan, au Kazakhstan et en d’autres pays.

Les suzanis sont généralement en coton (parfois en soie) et brodés de fil de soie ou de coton. Les points de chaînette, satin et boutonnière sont les principaux points utilisés.

Les motifs les plus populaires sont les disques solaire et lunaire, les fleurs (surtout tulipes, œillets et iris), les feuilles et les vignes, les fruits (principalement les grenades), et occasionnellement les poissons et les oiseaux. Le botha, motif d’origine indienne en forme de goutte d’eau, est également récurrent.

Suzani (pronounced souzani) is a type of decorative tribal embroidery and textile from Central Asia and is mainly manufactured in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and other countries.

Suzanis are generally made of cotton (sometimes silk) and embroidered with silk or cotton thread. Chain, satin and buttonhole stitches are the main stitches used. Often suzanis are made in two, or even several pieces, sewn together afterwards. The most popular motifs are solar and lunar disks, flowers (especially tulips, carnations and irises), leaves and vines, fruits (mainly pomegranates), and occasionally fish and birds. The botha, a pattern of Indian origin in the shape of a drop of water, is also recurring.
